The Challenge
The project involved the excavation of large-scale evaporation ponds and supporting marine works in an area with high-moisture soils and access constraints. The biggest challenge was maintaining productivity while sequencing works around other contractors on site. Additionally, the ground profile required careful shaping to ensure adequate water retention and environmental regulations governed material movement and disposal. The team needed to balance accuracy, volume and environmental compliance while keeping the works within the port’s larger project programme.
The Solution
Norwest Group mobilised GPS-enabled earthmoving equipment and experienced operators to deliver shaping and excavation works to specification. We implemented a staged delivery plan that aligned with the marine contractor’s schedule, avoiding delays to interconnected activities. Water management controls were introduced to stabilise the site during excavation. Our crushing and screening equipment processed materials for reuse, while internal logistics supported efficient haulage and on-site distribution. The team also provided regular updates to ensure transparent progress reporting.
The Result
The evaporation ponds were completed on time and in accordance with project specifications, providing long-term environmental functionality for the port site. Our work contributed to broader marine and land interface improvements under the client’s infrastructure upgrade strategy. The successful integration of earthworks, sequencing and stakeholder coordination reinforced Norwest’s role as a preferred contractor for high-risk, high-value civil packages. The project highlighted our ability to manage complex works with self-performed capability and collaborative execution.
